The Andes mountain range crosses the entire continent; It begins in the south, in Tierra del Fuego in Argentina, crosses the countries of Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, and ends in the north, in Venezuela. The highest point of the mountain range is located in Peru and rises to a height of 6,900 meters above sea level. In Colombia, the highest point of the mountain range is in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta - Cerro Colón at a height of 5,900 meters above sea level. In Colombia, the Andes mountain range is divided into three mountain ranges: the coffee axis is on the western side of the central mountain range and dominates the three provinces of Caldas, Risaralda and Quindio (their capitals are Manizales, Pereira and Armenia, respectively). The coffee region is actually a valley in the central mountain range located between 1,000 and 2,000 meters above sea level, an area suitable for growing coffee. The valley has become a very tourist destination thanks to the Valle de Cocora which has the tallest palm trees in the world. These trees grow throughout the territory of Colombia and Ecuador at heights of about 2,700 meters above sea level. Among the many palm forests scattered throughout Colombia, the Valle de Cocora is the most touristic, both because of its proximity to the Armenia airport and because of the easy access by car to the forest. To the north of the valley, for its entire length, runs the central Andes mountain range, which includes Los Nevados National Park, which is home to three of Colombia's six remaining snow-capped peaks.
You can travel the entire valley by public transport. If you will be visiting many destinations and using public transportation, consider an extra day when calculating travel times. The ends of the valley are the two destinations Manizales and Salento, you can start from either of them in the other direction. You can take a private transport between Manizales and Salento or in the opposite direction and request a stop at the intermediate destination (the coffee park or the Santa Rosa hot springs). If you are at least four people it is quite affordable.
Most of the tourists who are in the Eje del Cafe rush back to Medellin or Bogota for the weekend nightlife. So we recommend the Colombian nightlife; It is recommended to start the Eje del Cafe on the weekend, travel throughout the week and enjoy another weekend in the incredible Eje before returning to Medellin. Throughout the coffee region you can find all the nightlife and all kinds of music. From electronic parties, local discos, authentic bars, salsa classes, bachata, merengue and even tango halls for lovers of the genre.
Short route - Manizales (excursion to the active volcano Nevado del Ruiz and the hot springs of Aguas Calientes), the hot springs of Santa Rosa, Salento (Valle de Cocora). You can visit coffee farms in Menalez or Salento.
Intermediate route - Manizales, Santa Rosa, Finland, Coffee Park, Salento, Valle de Cocora.
Long route - Riosucio, Salamina, San Felix, Manizales, Santa Rosa, Filandia, Montenegro, La Tebaida, Coffee Park, Salento, Armero, Mariquita, Honda, La Dorada, Norcasia. From Norcasia you return to La Dorada and from there you can go to Medellín, Bogotá, Neiva (Tatacoa desert) and you can even take a bus to the coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta and Barranquilla).
-Finlandia: a Colombian pastoral town very similar to Salento but less touristy. Around the town you can visit more authentic coffee farms than those in Salento (most of the coffee farms near Salento are not dedicated to coffee production, but only to tourism).
-Salamina and San Félix: these are authentic towns where time seems to have stopped. Near San Félix there is a wax palm forest very similar to the Valle de Cocora; The forest is hardly ever visited and will be entirely at your disposal. (great quality for taking pictures)
